This is our biggest transformation to date, and it may well have been quicker to rebuild the house. The clients loved their original home in Harcourt, sitting among apple trees, and wanted a kitchen that matched the setting rather than a new home altogether. The original was dark, dated and barely functional. Walls came down, the entire front section of the house was reimagined, and this kitchen was built out of that new framework.
The original chimney is what steals it. In recent years it had housed a standard stove, but it was built for a wood-fired oven when the house went up. The painted red bricks were stripped back to restore the character, and the new oven now sits in the same space, with the rangehood built into the chimney structure and a pot-filler tap above it. A butler’s pantry takes the rest, with a second sink, wine cabinet and everything else out of sight. The main sink stayed at the window, framing the apple trees.
